Aless’s First Fever

Lil’ Aless woke up around 4:00 AM this morning. She loves waking up and making sure everyone else is awake, too, with happy sounds and laughter within seconds of opening her eyes. Today was different. She woke up whimpering and slightly crying. As soon as I picked her up I knew she was sick. Her skin was extremely hot to the touch and her face was very pale. I immediately took her temp which registered 101.6 rectally, and just over 100 under her arm. Dad ran her a cool bath, which helped bring down her temperature somewhat. But this didn’t make the sick, sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach go away.

No matter how many previous children you have had, that first time your infant is sick is overwhelming and scary. I’ve been watching her like a hawk all day, her temp fluctuating but never going above 101.6 from earlier this morning. I phoned the doctor just after 5:00 AM and they reassured me that we are taking all the right steps – which I knew. I’ve been through this three times already. I should be a pro by now. Yet still, I freak out like a Republican at a global warming convention.

It just goes to show that our love for our children is second-to-none. I’ll continue to watch her throughout the day and hope this is just one of those things.  Oh Aless.
