We had a great time at the Maine Lobster Festival 2012 today. The weather could not have been more perfect – overcast, very little direct sun and a nice ocean breeze. As usual, the air was filled with the scents of salt, seafood and fried goodness. Thanks to G’Pa Wedge, I have a bag of divine kettle corn to last me the next week or so. Yum!

My Self-Tanning Adventure

Today, I tried a new self-tanner. Not one you pick up from a drugstore either. I indulged. This baby was special ordered. Since my skin cancer scare, which we’re still monitoring, I have vowed to never let the sun or a tanning bed toast my skin again. And I won’t break that vow. Read more

Vintage Postcards – A Glimmer of My Childhood

Posted on by Crystal in Life As We Know It | Leave a comment

I grew up in an old farmhouse that was moved by oxen from its original location to the place it still stands today. Inside were all kinds of storage areas and “cubby” holes. One of those cubbies was like a hidden goldmine of old memorabilia, pictures, puzzles and games. This is where turn of the century postcards and scrap books sat waiting to be adorned upon. My grandmother and I spent countless afternoons looking through these vintage gems. Read more

Cinnful Cinnamon Bread Recipe

I love to bake. I’m really good at it, too, when I’m paying attention and not trying to be a vigilante Martha Stewart and guessing amounts using the palm of my hand and counting. Despite being a half-decent baker, I have certain recipes that I stick to over and over again. One is my Cinnful Cinnamon Bread. I make this on all the major food holidays – Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas – and often double the recipe so that I can send a loaf to my oldest boys’ grandmother’s house for them to enjoy as well. I whipped out a couple loafs a few days ago even though I had to improvise on pans since my bread pans went missing in the move. Here are a few pics and the recipe follows: Read more

I’m tired. Deeply, deeply tired. It’s been a rough couple of nights. I know I’m that special kind of tired because while watching a movie with Caden, I commented that the figure in the shadows looked like “an alien with testicles.” He looked at me and burst out laughing. Read more

How the Media Made Being Pregnant After 35 a Nightmare for Me

I was 37 when I carried and gave birth last year to my daughter, Alessandra. It was a relatively easy pregnancy, but I worried the entire time. I take that back. Worried is definitely an understatement. I was frantically obsessed that something “bad” was going to happen. The media had me convinced that because of my age there was a strong possibility I would have complications during labor or that my precious angel could be born with a birth defect. Although I was offered certain prenatal screening tests to check for problems ahead of time, I declined. I was even more petrified that invasive testing would cause complications or worse. After finally having my little girl within reach, I was not going to risk miscarrying or harming her in any way before she was born. Read more
