Cancer of the Asparagus

My 12-year-old son, Caden, has a lot to say. And often, what he says is truly comical. I’ve been sharing his funny outtakes, quotes and sayings on Facebook for years and thought I would capture them here, too, with an entire category devoted to him: Cadenisms!

The other day my husband and I had a conversation about my close friend losing her uncle to cancer. Naturally, he asked what type of cancer he died from, to which I explained it was esophageal cancer or “cancer of the esophagus” (my exact words). Throughout the duration of the conversation, Caden was standing off to the side with a bewildered look on his face.

Me: “Is something wrong?”

Caden: “No, why?”

Me: “Well, you look confused.”

Caden: “I’m just trying to understand how her uncle died. That’s all.”

Me: “He had cancer of the esophagus.”

>>still looking confused<<

Caden: “He had cancer of the long, green stuff?”

Me: “No, Caden. That’s asparagus.”

Behold the Cadenism.
