Why I Want Daylight Saving Time to Die a Painful Death

Since setting the clocks back, Aless has been falling asleep around six o’clock every evening. This is great except that she now wakes up at three o’clock – and I’m not talking about the afternoon. If you hear someone doing the dishes, folding laundry or cleaning out the fridge in the middle of the night, don’t worry. It’s just me, the walking, talking zombie mother. I want Daylight Saving Time to die a painful death. I do.

While the rest of the world is relishing the extra hour of sleep gained in the fall, mothers everywhere are flipping them the bird. Young children do not operate using a wall clock. Their time is hard-wired, internally. We can’t tell our infants and toddlers to go back to bed for an hour. When they’re up, they’re up and roaring to go.

If you’re reading this and wondering what the big deal is – kid goes to bed an hour earlier and wakes up an hour earlier so it’s the same amount of sleep – it’s looking at the time and seeing 3:00 dangling in front of your weary eyes. It has assholic psychological effects. Ask my husband.

When I wake up and see that time, I cringe. The cringing turns into dread. The dread turns into an overwhelming feeling of defeat. It’s not a great way to start the day. If Aless happens to fall back to sleep before 6:00, I try to slip in a catnap; but most of the time, she doesn’t tire out until well past 6:00, after my work day has already begun.

I’m not going to lie, this article on The Stir pissed me off. Am I cynical? Yes! You bet I am! There is just no need to mess with time simply to gain one hour of extra daylight. Cave men lived without it. So can we. Oh! Am I aggravated that even mainstream media add an “s” to Saving(s)? Oh yeah. It is not Daylight Savings Time! Drop the “s”!

The next time you get excited about turning the clocks back in the fall, think of all the moms out there. And remember. For every fall back there is a spring ahead! >>evil grin<<
